Sophia Leitenmayer – Three River Pieces
A Portjouney Collaboration with Ono Point, Tsurumi/ Yokohama and HyCP Hamburg
The work consists of three river pieces: one for the Ōoka River, one for the Katabira River, and one for the Tsurumi River that runs through the city of Yokohama. This 7-channel sound installation with video and objects is a sonic memorial of the rivers, which shows the sensitive interconnection of places and bodies of water.
S.L. did recordings at different places at the three rivers of Yokohama – Ooka River where they temporarily lived, Katabira river in the middle and Tsurumi river where S.L. worked on this side-specific installation. Important traffic lines cross all those rivers and flow to the port and have huge historical backgrounds.
The embodied work is about connecting to the fluid environment of places and public mourning at waters by listening to the rivers via hydrophone while playing saxophone at the riverbank.
The physical parts are 3D-printed objects and ‚organ skins‘ that display the musical score of the river recording places, a kind of graphic notation and drawing on latex molds of the artist’s organ. Together with local steelworkers from Tsurumi, S.L. built steel frames in 16:9 format adapted to the exhibition site and bent steel rods in the shape of the three river courses as additional spatial elements.
Additional to that the side specific installation includes a video that documents the performative working process at the rivers and 3-D scans of the particular environment.
This installation was created for and displayed at Ono Point, Yokohama, Japan. The small gallery is located on the second floor in a traditional housing building and it’s embedded in a scenario of bars and restaurants that form the center of the working-class district between Yokohama and Tokyo, located at the train station. The exhibition was accompanied by a musical performance in the building’s inner courtyard.
